(12) Lawn Hill NP (Boodjamulla)

We left the Gulf country and headed south to the Lawn Hill NP (Boodjamulla). On the way we pit-stopped overnight at Gregory Downs (pop 40) behind the pub ($20 donation to RFDS) Not famous for much but surviving on providing a safe camping area behind the Hotel for passing travelers. The Hotel has been here since 1873 when they established a cattle station. After passing through 100’s of Kms of dried off grassland the green Gregory river is a surprise with water all year round due to the springs in Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill NP). We filled up our water tanks here – last stop before 4 days in Lawn Hill National Park. Our campsite in the NP was really nice. The facilities block had clean toilets and cold showers so we tried out our solar shower water bag for the first time. Naaa – we decided to have nice warm showers in the van!

The river had plenty of water and there were many lovely walking tracks – best tackled after the heat of the day (and after the day trippers had departed). School holidays + grey nomads = far too many visitors!

One walk we wanted to do was ‘Island Stack’ but the last big wet had washed out the bridge. Island Stack as it’s name implies is an island where you can climb up and have 360 degree overview of the park. There were a couple of trees fallen across the river downstream from the remains of the old bridge which made it possible to clamber across. We started out early in the day and the effort was worth it as it got us away from the crowds and we had a great morning. The Indarri Falls is one of the other main attractions where you can walk or canoe up to the falls and swim safely in the many waterholes.
